Compensation: Up to ¥420,000 per month (based on experience and qualifications)
About the Role
As a 8th Grade Teacher at the International School of Tokyo, you will have the opportunity to shape and deliver a curriculum that bridges rigorous academics with creative exploration. You will be responsible for designing engaging lessons and projects across a broad range of subjects. Our integrated approach encourages students to think critically, collaborate effectively, and apply their learning to real-world contexts. The subjects you will teach include:
- English Language Arts:
- Reading & Literature: Engage students with diverse texts—from classic literature to modern informational pieces—to enhance their comprehension and analytical skills.
- Writing: Guide students through the process of crafting structured essays, creative narratives, and persuasive arguments while refining their grammar and style.
- Speaking & Listening: Facilitate discussions, debates, and presentations to build confident communication skills.
- Japanese Language:
- Language Skills: Strengthen students’ abilities in reading, writing (with continued focus on kanji, hiragana, and katakana), speaking, and listening.
- Cultural Studies: Deepen understanding of Japanese history, traditions, and contemporary societal issues to foster cultural appreciation and identity.
- Mathematics:
- Introduce pre-algebra or introductory algebra, geometry, and data analysis, emphasizing problem-solving and practical applications of mathematical concepts.
- Science:
- Life Science: Explore detailed studies of biological systems and ecosystems.
- Physical Science: Investigate fundamental principles of physics and chemistry through hands-on experiments and inquiry-based projects.
- Earth & Space Science: Examine the Earth’s processes, weather patterns, and basic astronomical concepts to spark scientific curiosity.
- Social Studies:
- History & Geography: Conduct comparative studies of world history and cultural geography, broadening students’ perspectives on global events and societal development.
- Civics & Global Citizenship: Teach governmental systems, civic responsibilities, and the role of individuals as global citizens, preparing students for active participation in society.
- Arts:
- Visual Arts: Encourage creative expression through projects in drawing, painting, sculpture, and digital media.
- Performing Arts: Provide opportunities in drama, dance, and other performance activities that build confidence and teamwork.
- Music:
- Develop musical skills through theory, performance, and exposure to a wide range of musical genres and instruments.
- Physical Education (PE):
- Promote physical fitness and teamwork through engaging sports, games, and movement-based activities that support a healthy lifestyle.
- Technology & Digital Literacy:
- Integrate essential computer skills, basic coding, digital research techniques, and multimedia projects, while emphasizing the responsible use of technology.
- Integrated or Enrichment Projects:
- Lead cross-curricular projects that allow students to connect ideas from multiple disciplines, fostering creativity, critical thinking, and collaborative problem-solving.
Attributes of an Excellent Candidate
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualities:
- Educational Background:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field is required, with a Master’s degree being highly desirable.
- A valid teaching certification is preferred.
- Teaching Experience:
- Proven experience teaching at the middle school level, ideally within an international or bilingual educational setting.
- Demonstrated ability to design and implement engaging, differentiated lessons that meet the needs of diverse learners.
- Pedagogical Expertise:
- A strong commitment to inquiry-based, student-centered learning with an emphasis on real-world applications.
- Experience integrating technology and digital literacy into classroom instruction.
- Communication & Collaboration:
- Excellent communication skills in English; proficiency in Japanese is an asset.
- Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in a multicultural environment and contribute positively to a dynamic school community.
