Compensation: Up to ¥420,000 per month (dependent on experience and qualifications)
About the Role
As a 7th Grade Teacher at the International School of Tokyo, you will be responsible for designing and delivering engaging lessons across a variety of subjects. Our integrated curriculum emphasizes both academic rigor and creative exploration. You will have the opportunity to work with students in a supportive and innovative environment, guiding them through subjects that develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication skills.
Subjects Taught
- English Language Arts:
- Reading & Literature: Encourage students to analyze diverse texts, including novels, short stories, and informational pieces, to build deep comprehension and critical analysis skills.
- Writing: Develop students’ abilities in narrative, persuasive, and expository writing by guiding them through structured essays, creative writing exercises, and reflective journals.
- Speaking & Listening: Facilitate class discussions, debates, and presentations to build confidence and effective communication skills.
- Japanese Language:
- Language Skills: Enhance students’ abilities in reading, writing (including continued exploration of kanji), speaking, and listening.
- Cultural Studies: Integrate lessons on Japanese history, traditions, and contemporary society to reinforce cultural identity and understanding in a global context.
- Mathematics:
- Teach core concepts such as algebraic thinking, geometry, ratios, proportions, and introductory statistics and probability. Emphasize problem-solving and real-world applications to make abstract concepts tangible.
- Science:
- Life Science: Deepen understanding of biological systems and ecosystems, highlighting the interdependence of living organisms.
- Earth & Space Science: Explore topics such as the Earth’s structure, weather patterns, and introductory astronomy to ignite curiosity about the natural world.
- Physical Science: Guide students through fundamental principles of matter, energy, and introductory physics concepts using experiments and hands-on inquiry-based projects.
- Social Studies:
- History & Geography: Engage students with comparative studies of global civilizations, significant historical events, and geographical exploration to broaden their worldview.
- Civics & Global Citizenship: Teach about governmental systems, civic responsibilities, and the importance of global engagement to foster informed, active citizens.
- Arts:
- Visual Arts: Encourage creative expression through hands-on projects involving drawing, painting, sculpture, and digital media.
- Performing Arts: Provide opportunities in drama, dance, and other performance arts, allowing students to explore creative self-expression and build confidence.
- Music:
- Develop an appreciation of music through theory, performance, and exposure to various musical genres and instruments.
- Physical Education (PE):
- Promote physical fitness, teamwork, and healthy lifestyles through engaging sports, games, and movement-based activities.
- Technology & Digital Literacy:
- Introduce essential computer skills, coding basics, digital research techniques, and projects that integrate technology across the curriculum, while emphasizing responsible digital citizenship.
- Integrated or Enrichment Projects:
- Lead cross-curricular projects that connect concepts across subjects, encouraging students to apply their knowledge in creative, real-world contexts.
Attributes of an Excellent Candidate
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualities:
- Educational Background:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field is required, with a Master’s degree preferred.
- A valid teaching certification is highly desirable.
- Experience:
- Proven experience teaching at the middle school level, preferably within an international or bilingual educational environment.
- Pedagogical Expertise:
- A strong commitment to inquiry-based, student-centered learning.
- Demonstrated ability to design and implement engaging, differentiated lessons that cater to a diverse student population.
- Communication & Collaboration:
- Excellent communication skills in English, with proficiency in Japanese considered a plus.
- Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in a multicultural setting, contributing to a positive and innovative school culture.
- Technological Proficiency:
- Skilled in integrating technology into classroom instruction to enhance learning experiences and digital literacy.
- Cultural Sensitivity:
- An appreciation for diversity and the ability to incorporate global perspectives into everyday learning.
