Position: 5th Grade Teacher
Location: Tokyo, Japan
Start Date: August 25th
Work Day: 7 hours per day
Compensation: Up to ¥420,000 per month (based on experience and qualifications)


About the Role

The International School of Tokyo is seeking a dynamic and experienced 5th Grade Teacher to join our vibrant, multicultural community. Our curriculum is inquiry-based and integrated, aiming to develop globally-minded students through a comprehensive educational experience. The successful candidate will teach a broad range of subjects in English while also incorporating Japanese language and cultural studies.

Subjects Taught

  • English Language Arts
    • Reading & Literature: Enhancing comprehension and critical thinking through diverse texts.
    • Writing: Fostering narrative, informational, and persuasive writing skills.
    • Speaking & Listening: Developing effective communication through discussions, presentations, and collaborative projects.
  • Japanese Language
    • Language Skills: Reading, writing (hiragana, katakana, and introductory kanji), speaking, and listening.
    • Cultural Studies: Exploring Japanese culture, traditions, and history.
  • Mathematics
    • Advanced number operations, fractions, decimals, geometry, measurement, data analysis, and problem-solving strategies.
  • Science
    • Life Science: Ecosystems, human biology, plants, and animals.
    • Earth Science: Weather, natural resources, and environmental stewardship.
    • Physical Science: Energy, matter, and introductory physics through hands-on experiments.
  • Social Studies
    • History & Geography: Local, national, and global histories, along with map skills and cultural diversity.
    • Civics & Global Citizenship: Understanding community roles, governmental basics, and the importance of being an engaged global citizen.
  • Arts
    • Visual Arts: Experimenting with various media and techniques.
    • Performing Arts: Participating in drama, dance, and creative expression activities.
  • Music
    • Building musical skills through theory, rhythm, singing, and sometimes instrument exploration.
  • Physical Education (PE)
    • Promoting physical fitness, motor skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
  • Technology & Digital Literacy
    • Introducing basic computer skills, online research, digital storytelling, and safe, responsible use of technology.
  • Enrichment & Integrated Learning Projects
    • Engaging students in cross-curricular projects that connect academic concepts to real-world applications.

Attributes of an Excellent Candidate

  • Educational Background:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Teaching Experience:
    • Proven experience teaching at the elementary level, especially in an international or bilingual setting.
  • Pedagogical Skills:
    • Passion for inquiry-based and student-centered learning.
    • Strong classroom management and the ability to adapt teaching strategies to diverse learners.
  • Multicultural Competence:
    • Experience working in multicultural environments with an understanding of global citizenship.
  • Technology Proficiency:
    • Familiarity with integrating technology into the classroom to enhance learning.
  • Creative & Collaborative:
    • Ability to design integrated learning projects and collaborate effectively with fellow educators.
  • Communication:
    • Excellent communication skills in English, with proficiency in Japanese considered a plus.
