Compensation: Up to ¥420,000 per month (based on experience and qualifications)


About the Role

As a 12th Grade Teacher at the International School of Tokyo, you will be at the forefront of preparing students for their academic futures. Your role will involve delivering high-quality instruction in a wide range of subjects and AP courses. You will work within a dynamic, inquiry-based learning environment that not only emphasizes content mastery but also cultivates critical thinking, creativity, and global awareness. In this pivotal academic year, you will help students refine their skills and pursue their interests in preparation for university-level studies and beyond.


Subjects Taught

Our 12th-grade curriculum is designed to offer depth and flexibility to meet the diverse needs and aspirations of our students. The subjects taught include:

  • English Language Arts:
    • Core Courses: Advanced literature and writing classes focusing on critical analysis, creative expression, and persuasive communication.
    • AP Options: Courses such as AP English Language & Composition or AP English Literature & Composition, where students engage with challenging texts and develop sophisticated writing skills.
  • Japanese Language:
    • Advanced Language Courses: Building upon previous language instruction, these courses enhance reading, writing (with a focus on advanced kanji), speaking, and listening skills.
    • Cultural Studies: An in-depth exploration of Japanese literature, history, and cultural traditions to foster a deeper understanding of local heritage and contemporary society.
  • Mathematics:
    • Core Mathematics: Instruction in advanced algebra, geometry, and pre-calculus to strengthen problem-solving and analytical skills.
    • AP Mathematics Options: Options such as AP Calculus AB/BC or AP Statistics, offering students a rigorous introduction to college-level mathematical concepts and methodologies.
  • Science:
    • General Science Courses: Advanced laboratory-based classes that build on foundational knowledge in biology, chemistry, and physics.
    • AP Science Courses: Offerings such as AP Biology, AP Chemistry, and various AP Physics courses (e.g., AP Physics 1, AP Physics 2, or AP Physics C), which provide students with an immersive experience in scientific inquiry and experimentation.
  • Social Studies:
    • Core Courses: Classes covering modern world history, government, economics, and global studies, designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of historical trends and civic responsibilities.
    • AP Social Studies Options: Courses such as AP World History, AP U.S. History, AP Government and Politics, or AP Economics, engaging students in critical analysis of complex political and economic systems.
  • Foreign Languages/Additional Electives:
    • While English and Japanese are the primary language offerings, students may have access to other foreign language courses (e.g., AP Spanish Language or AP French Language) to enhance their cultural and linguistic proficiency.
  • Arts:
    • Visual & Performing Arts: Electives that include studio art, music, theater, or dance, with options for AP Art History or AP Studio Art, encouraging creative expression and critical appreciation of art.
  • Physical Education & Wellness:
    • Courses that promote physical fitness, teamwork, and healthy lifestyle practices through a range of sports and movement-based activities.
  • Technology & Digital Literacy:
    • Classes that focus on advanced computer skills, coding, digital research, and multimedia projects, with AP options such as AP Computer Science A to prepare students for the digital age.
  • Interdisciplinary Electives and Capstone Projects:
    • Opportunities for students to engage in cross-curricular projects or specialized electives (e.g., business studies, psychology like AP Psychology, or interdisciplinary research) that integrate knowledge from multiple fields and promote real-world problem-solving.

Attributes of an Excellent Candidate

The ideal candidate for our 12th Grade Teacher position will possess the following qualities:

  • Educational Background:
    • A Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field is required; a Master’s degree is highly desirable.
  • Professional Experience:
    • Demonstrated experience teaching at the secondary level, particularly within an international or bilingual educational setting.
    • A proven record of designing and delivering engaging, differentiated instruction that caters to diverse student needs and learning styles.
  • Pedagogical Expertise:
    • A commitment to inquiry-based, student-centered teaching practices that promote critical thinking, creativity, and independent learning.
    • Expertise in integrating technology into the curriculum to enhance classroom instruction and student engagement.
  • Communication & Collaboration:
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English; proficiency in Japanese is an asset.
