Compensation: Up to ¥420,000 per month (based on experience and qualifications)


About the Role

As a 10th Grade Teacher at the International School of Tokyo, you will play a key role in guiding students through a comprehensive curriculum that balances advanced academics with opportunities for specialized study and interdisciplinary projects. You will be expected to design and deliver engaging lessons that not only enhance students’ understanding of core subjects but also encourage them to apply their learning to real-world scenarios. Our goal is to ensure that students are well-prepared for the academic rigors of high school and for their future roles as global citizens.

Subjects Taught

Your instructional responsibilities will span a wide range of subjects, including:

  • English Language Arts:
    • Reading & Literature: Facilitate in-depth analysis of both classic and contemporary texts, encouraging students to engage critically with literature and informational texts.
    • Writing: Guide students through advanced essay writing, creative compositions, and research-based projects to hone their ability to articulate ideas clearly and persuasively.
    • Speaking & Listening: Develop students’ communication skills through debates, presentations, and interactive discussions.
  • Japanese Language:
    • Language Skills: Continue to develop students’ proficiency in reading, writing (with an emphasis on an expanding kanji repertoire), speaking, and listening.
    • Cultural Studies: Integrate lessons that explore Japanese literature, history, and cultural traditions, thereby fostering a deeper connection with local and global contexts.
  • Mathematics:
    • Teach advanced topics such as algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and, depending on student progression, introductory precalculus or calculus. Emphasis is placed on logical reasoning, problem-solving, and real-world applications of mathematical principles.
  • Science:
    • Biology: Offer detailed studies in cell biology, genetics, and ecosystems to develop a comprehensive understanding of living systems.
    • Chemistry: Explore fundamental chemical reactions, the periodic table, and laboratory techniques to build a solid foundation in chemical sciences.
    • Physics: Introduce key concepts such as motion, energy, and forces through engaging, hands-on experiments and inquiry-based learning.
    • Note: Depending on the structure of the program, some subjects may be taught as integrated science courses or offered as specialized electives.
  • Social Studies:
    • History & Geography: Provide comparative studies of world history, modern history, and cultural geography, encouraging students to understand historical trends and global interconnections.
    • Civics & Global Citizenship: Engage students in discussions about governmental systems, civic responsibilities, and economic principles, preparing them to be informed and active global citizens.
  • Arts:
    • Visual Arts: Encourage creative expression through projects involving drawing, painting, sculpture, and digital media.
    • Performing Arts: Offer elective courses in drama, dance, or music that foster collaboration, creativity, and personal expression.
  • Physical Education (PE):
    • Develop programs that promote physical fitness, teamwork, and healthy lifestyles through a variety of sports and movement-based activities.
  • Technology & Digital Literacy:
    • Integrate advanced computer skills, coding, digital research techniques, and multimedia projects into the curriculum, emphasizing responsible and effective use of technology.
  • Electives/Interdisciplinary Projects:
    • Provide opportunities for students to engage in elective courses and cross-curricular projects that explore additional interests such as advanced computer science, additional languages, business studies, or specialized art and music programs.

Attributes of an Excellent Candidate

The ideal candidate for our 10th Grade Teacher position will have:

  • Educational Background:
    • A Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field is required; a Master’s degree is highly 
  • Professional Experience:
    • Demonstrated experience teaching at the secondary level, ideally within an international or bilingual school setting.
    • A track record of designing and implementing engaging, differentiated lessons that cater to diverse learning styles.
  • Pedagogical Expertise:
    • A strong commitment to inquiry-based, student-centered learning, with the ability to integrate cross-disciplinary concepts and real-world applications into lessons.
    • Expertise in utilizing technology to enhance instruction and learning outcomes.
  • Communication & Collaboration Skills:
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English; proficiency in Japanese is an asset.
    • A collaborative spirit, with a demonstrated ability to work effectively with colleagues in a multicultural environment, contributing to a positive and innovative school culture.
  • Cultural Sensitivity & Global Awareness:
    • A genuine appreciation for diversity and the ability to incorporate global perspectives into the curriculum, preparing students to thrive in a multicultural world.
