About the Role
As a 11th Grade Teacher at the International School of Tokyo, you will play a pivotal role in delivering a comprehensive curriculum designed to engage students and challenge their intellectual abilities. Our program is carefully structured to provide rigorous academic instruction along with opportunities for creative exploration and interdisciplinary learning. You will have the opportunity to lead classes in a range of subjects that prepare students for academic success in college and beyond.
Subjects Taught
Your teaching responsibilities will span a broad spectrum of subjects, ensuring a well-rounded education for our 11th-grade students:
- English Language Arts:
- Reading & Literature: You will lead students in the in-depth analysis of classic and contemporary literary works, enhancing their critical interpretation and comprehension skills.
- Writing: The curriculum emphasizes advanced writing techniques including essays, creative narratives, and research-based projects, enabling students to articulate complex ideas clearly.
- Speaking & Listening: Through debates, presentations, and interactive discussions, you will help students develop confident communication skills.
- Japanese Language:
- Language Skills: Build upon students’ proficiency in reading, writing (with an emphasis on expanding their kanji knowledge), speaking, and listening to achieve higher levels of fluency.
- Cultural Studies: Integrate lessons that explore Japanese literature, history, and cultural traditions, fostering a deeper connection with both local and global contexts.
- Mathematics:
- Teach advanced mathematical concepts such as algebra II, precalculus, or calculus. Focus on developing problem-solving skills and applying mathematical reasoning to real-world scenarios.
- Science:
- Biology: Explore the fundamentals of cellular biology, genetics, and ecosystem dynamics, nurturing a deep understanding of life sciences.
- Chemistry: Guide students through the principles of chemical reactions, periodic trends, and laboratory methodologies.
- Physics: Introduce core principles such as motion, energy, and force, using a blend of theoretical lessons and practical experiments to solidify understanding.
- Social Studies:
- History & Geography: Provide a comparative study of world history and cultural geography, encouraging students to analyze historical trends and understand global interconnections.
- Civics & Global Citizenship: Discuss governmental systems, civic responsibilities, and economic principles to prepare students to be informed, active participants in society.
- Arts and Music:
- Offer elective courses or integrated projects in visual and performing arts, as well as music, to foster creative expression and cultural appreciation.
- Physical Education (PE):
- Develop students’ physical fitness, teamwork, and healthy lifestyles through a variety of sports and movement-based activities.
- Technology & Digital Literacy:
- Incorporate advanced computer skills, coding, digital research techniques, and multimedia projects into your teaching, emphasizing the responsible use of technology.
- Electives/Interdisciplinary Projects:
- Lead or support cross-curricular projects and elective courses that allow students to explore additional areas of interest, from advanced computer science to business studies or specialized art and humanities projects.
Attributes of an Excellent Candidate
The ideal candidate for our 11th Grade Teacher position will exhibit the following qualities:
- Educational Background:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field is required; a Master’s degree is highly desirable.
- Professional Experience:
- Demonstrated experience teaching at the secondary level, preferably within an international or bilingual school environment.
- A proven track record of designing and delivering engaging, differentiated lessons that meet the diverse needs of students.
- Pedagogical Expertise:
- A strong commitment to inquiry-based, student-centered teaching practices that encourage critical thinking and problem-solving.
- Proven ability to integrate technology into classroom instruction to enhance learning outcomes.
- Communication & Collaboration:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English; proficiency in Japanese is an asset.
