The International School of Tokyo is seeking an experienced and dynamic 6th Grade Teacher to join our dedicated faculty. This role offers an exciting opportunity to guide students through a comprehensive, inquiry-based curriculum designed to foster academic excellence, cultural understanding, and personal growth.

Start Date: August 25th
Compensation: Up to ¥420,000 per month (dependent on experience and qualifications)

About the Role

In this position, you will be responsible for teaching a well-rounded curriculum that encompasses both academic rigor and cultural enrichment. As a 6th Grade Teacher, you will deliver instruction in the following subjects:

  • English Language Arts:
    Develop students’ skills in reading and literature by engaging them with diverse texts including fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. Enhance their writing abilities with a focus on narrative, informative, and persuasive techniques. Facilitate discussions and presentations to strengthen speaking and listening skills.
  • Japanese Language:
    Guide students through advanced language skills by building on their abilities in reading, writing (with an emphasis on expanding their kanji repertoire), speaking, and listening. Integrate cultural studies to deepen their understanding of Japanese traditions, history, and contemporary society.
  • Mathematics:
    Teach advanced number operations, algebraic thinking, geometry, measurement, fractions, decimals, and introductory data analysis. Encourage critical problem-solving skills through practical, hands-on exercises and real-world applications.
  • Science:
    Cover life science topics such as ecosystems, biodiversity, and human biology. Introduce earth science concepts by exploring weather patterns and environmental phenomena. Engage students in physical science through experiments focusing on energy, matter, and basic principles of physics and chemistry.
  • Social Studies:
    Provide comparative studies in history and geography, examining national, regional, and global contexts. Teach civics and global citizenship to help students understand governmental systems, rights, and responsibilities, while emphasizing the importance of being an informed global citizen.
  • Arts:
    Stimulate creativity through visual arts projects that encourage exploration of various media and techniques. Offer performing arts opportunities in drama, dance, and other creative endeavors to build confidence and collaborative skills.
  • Music:
    Foster musical understanding through instruction in theory, performance, and the study of various genres and instruments.
  • Physical Education (PE):
    Promote physical fitness, teamwork, and healthy lifestyles with engaging sports, games, and movement-based activities.
  • Technology & Digital Literacy:
    Introduce essential computer skills, online research, coding, and multimedia projects, emphasizing the importance of digital citizenship.
  • Integrated or Enrichment Projects:
    Lead cross-curricular projects that allow students to apply their knowledge in practical, real-world contexts, linking various subject areas for a holistic learning experience.

Attributes of an Excellent Candidate

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • A passion for inquiry-based and student-centered learning, along with a proven ability to manage a dynamic classroom.
  • Strong communication skills in English; proficiency in Japanese is a plus.
  • The ability to incorporate technology into the classroom effectively, using innovative strategies to enhance learning.
  • Cultural sensitivity and the ability to work collaboratively in a diverse, multicultural team.
  • Creativity and the capacity to design engaging, integrated projects that make learning both meaningful and fun.
