Compensation: Up to ¥420,000 per month (based on experience and qualifications)


About the Role

As a 9th Grade Teacher at the International School of Tokyo, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the educational journey of our students. You will be responsible for designing and delivering engaging, cross-curricular lessons across a range of subjects. Our comprehensive curriculum for 9th grade is crafted to not only enhance academic skills but also to promote holistic development and prepare students for the transition to high school.

Subjects Taught

  • English Language Arts:
    • Reading & Literature: Engage students with a variety of texts—from classic literature to contemporary works—to develop deep comprehension and critical analysis skills.
    • Writing: Enhance students’ abilities in essay writing, creative storytelling, and research reporting, ensuring they master clear, persuasive, and structured expression.
    • Speaking & Listening: Facilitate discussions, debates, and presentations that build confident and articulate communicators.
  • Japanese Language:
    • Language Skills: Continue the advancement of reading, writing (with an expanding kanji repertoire), speaking, and listening skills.
    • Cultural Studies: Explore Japanese history, literature, and cultural traditions, deepening students’ connection with local and global perspectives.
  • Mathematics:
    • Cover essential concepts including algebra, geometry, and introductory trigonometry or precalculus. Emphasis is placed on problem-solving, logical reasoning, and applying mathematical principles to real-world situations.
  • Science:
    • Biology: Delve into cell biology, genetics, and ecosystems to understand living systems in depth.
    • Chemistry: Introduce fundamental chemical reactions, the periodic table, and laboratory techniques.
    • Physics: Explore principles of motion, energy, and forces through engaging, hands-on experiments and inquiry-based learning.
  • Social Studies:
    • History & Geography: Offer comparative studies in world history and cultural geography, encouraging a broad understanding of historical trends and global interconnections.
    • Civics & Global Citizenship: Discuss governmental systems, civic responsibilities, and economic principles to prepare students for active participation as global citizens.
  • Arts:
    • Visual Arts: Encourage creative expression with projects in drawing, painting, sculpture, and digital media.
    • Performing Arts: Provide opportunities in drama, dance, or other performance activities to build confidence and collaborative skills.
  • Music:
    • Develop musical skills through theory, performance, and exposure to diverse musical genres, fostering both auditory learning and cultural appreciation.
  • Physical Education (PE):
    • Promote physical fitness, teamwork, and well-being through a range of sports, fitness routines, and movement-based activities.
  • Technology & Digital Literacy:
    • Integrate essential computer skills, coding, digital research techniques, and multimedia projects, emphasizing responsible and effective use of technology.
  • Electives/Integrated Enrichment Projects:
    • Encourage interdisciplinary learning through elective courses and cross-curricular projects that allow students to explore additional languages, advanced computer science topics, or specialized art and music programs.

Attributes of an Excellent Candidate

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Educational Background:
    • A Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field (a Master’s degree is highly desirable).
    • Experience: Demonstrated experience teaching at the secondary level, ideally within an international or bilingual school environment.
    • A proven track record of designing and implementing engaging, differentiated lessons that meet the needs of diverse learners.
  • Pedagogical Expertise:
    • A strong commitment to inquiry-based, student-centered teaching practices.
    • Experience integrating technology effectively into the classroom to enhance learning outcomes.
  • Communication & Collaboration:
    • Excellent communication skills in English; proficiency in Japanese is an asset.
    • Ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural setting and contribute to a positive, innovative school community.
